Learn the statistical ideas needed before selecting and interpreting a procedure. STAT LAB emphasizes reasoning rather than rigid cutoffs.
Understand the bell-shaped model, mean, standard deviation, and the approximate 68–95–99.7 rule. Real data do not need to form a perfect bell.
SD describes variability among observations; SE describes sampling uncertainty of an estimator; confidence intervals communicate estimation uncertainty.
Interpret p-values together with effect size, confidence intervals, direction, descriptive statistics, and substantive context.
Begin with the research question, design, grouping, pairing, measurement level, distribution, outliers, and assumptions—not Shapiro–Wilk alone.
This is an approximate property of a normal distribution, not a standalone normality test. Use it for conceptual learning rather than as a replacement for graphical diagnostics and study-specific judgment.

Follow these steps to use the application systematically and to evaluate the suitability of each analysis before reporting the results.
Enter scores separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks. For paired data (e.g., pretest–posttest), values in the same position must belong to the same participant.
STAT LAB checks for empty input, nonnumeric values, unequal numbers of paired observations, and zero variance. Researchers must also verify missing data, pairing accuracy, score ranges, and source-data integrity.
Base the choice on the research objective and hypothesis, study design, number of groups, independent versus paired observations, level of measurement, distributional characteristics, outliers, and test-specific assumptions. Do not select a procedure solely from the Shapiro–Wilk p-value.
Based on Songsak Phusee-orn's discussion of preliminary data analysis and mean-comparison procedures, the suitability of a parametric analysis depends on the research design, measurement scale, grouping/paired structure, distributional form, outliers, and test-specific assumptions. A normal distribution is described visually as approximately symmetric and bell-shaped; a histogram with a normal curve can support this assessment.
STAT LAB therefore does not use sample size alone as a switch between parametric and nonparametric procedures. The advisor combines design information with Histogram + Normal Curve, Q-Q Plot, Shapiro-Wilk, outlier screening, and variance diagnostics. For paired designs, the difference score is especially important.
Click Analyze. The system displays diagnostics relevant to the selected procedure, such as Shapiro–Wilk, potential outliers, and Levene/Brown–Forsythe for independent groups. Some assumptions—especially independence and correct pairing—must be justified from the study design rather than from the numeric data alone.
Interpret the p-value together with the confidence interval, effect size, direction of the effect, descriptive statistics, and the substantive context. For nonparametric procedures, also consider the median, IQR, mean ranks, rank sums, and rank-biserial effect size as appropriate.
Each analysis includes a Suggested report for Chapter 4 / Results and a separate Methodological note. The generated text is a reporting draft and must be checked against the research question, hypothesis, variable names, and institutional or journal reporting requirements. Mean-based analyses report M = mean and SD = standard deviation consistently; nonparametric summaries retain Mdn/IQR or rank-based statistics as appropriate to the procedure.
The current export is a Word-compatible .doc file. Before submission, verify table numbering, typography, statistical symbols, and the formatting requirements of your institution or target journal.
Statistical significance cannot compensate for limitations in research design, sampling, measurement quality, or control of confounding variables. For example, a one-group pretest–posttest design can demonstrate change over time but, by itself, cannot establish a causal treatment effect.
Core principle: E1 is based on scores earned from the instructional-process activities specified in the learning plan, such as worksheets, exercises, learning tasks, or quizzes. These activity scores are summed for each learner to obtain that learner’s total process score, which is then used to calculate E1. E2 is based on the post-instruction score collected at the end of the learning process.
Example: If there are five activities worth 10 points each, the maximum total process score is 50. A learner scoring 8, 7, 9, 8, and 9 has a total process score of 41/50.
STAT LAB provides two E1 input methods: (1) if process scores have already been summed, enter each learner’s total (e.g., 41, 40, ...) and the combined maximum (50); or (2) choose the separate-activities option, enter each activity maximum and one learner per row, and STAT LAB will sum the scores automatically.
Important: Activities included in E1 should be defined as part of the instructional process in advance rather than selected after examining the scores. E1 is not the pretest, and E1/E2 is not a pretest–posttest significance test.
PAOR structures classroom action research as iterative cycles: Plan, Act, Observe, Reflect. Reflection from one cycle should inform revision of the next cycle.
Quantitative evidence: enter learner scores for each cycle. STAT LAB reports n, mean, SD, mean percentage, number/percentage meeting the individual criterion, and cross-cycle trends.
Qualitative evidence: record the plan/problem, action taken, observations/evidence, what worked, problems/causes, and the next-cycle adjustment. STAT LAB organizes these notes into a PAOR narrative for the Results section.
Important: do not report only Cycle 1–2–3 scores. The report should show how reflection informed subsequent planning (e.g., R₁ → P₂). The program structures researcher-entered qualitative notes; it does not replace formal qualitative content analysis or researcher interpretation.

A concise academic overview of the concepts used by STAT LAB.
Mean (M) summarizes the arithmetic center of a quantitative variable, whereas the median (Mdn) summarizes the middle ordered value. Standard deviation (SD) describes dispersion around the mean. For skewed data or data affected by extreme observations, the median and interquartile range (IQR) often provide a more robust summary.
The standard error (SE) is conceptually different from the SD: SD describes variability among observations, whereas SE describes sampling variability of an estimator such as the sample mean.
E1 (process efficiency) expresses the mean score obtained during instruction as a percentage of the maximum total process score. E2 (product/outcome efficiency) expresses the mean post-instruction score as a percentage of the maximum posttest score.
E1/E2 is an instructional-efficiency criterion rather than a pretest–posttest significance test. E1 is not the pretest. A criterion such as 80/80 should be specified before interpreting the results.
One-sample t test: tests whether a population mean differs from, exceeds, or falls below a prespecified criterion (μ₀).
Independent-samples t test: compares means from two independent groups. Student's version assumes equal population variances; Welch's version does not require that assumption and is generally robust when variances and/or sample sizes differ.
Paired-samples t test: analyzes the mean of within-pair differences. The normality consideration applies to the difference scores, not separately to the pretest and posttest distributions.
Shapiro–Wilk evaluates evidence of departure from normality. A significant result is not, by itself, a rule requiring a nonparametric test. Sample size, distributional shape, influential outliers, measurement level, and the estimand of interest should also be considered.
Levene/Brown–Forsythe evaluates homogeneity of variance. A nonsignificant result indicates insufficient evidence of unequal variances; it does not demonstrate that the variances are exactly equal.
A p-value is computed under the null hypothesis. It should be interpreted together with a confidence interval and an effect size. Statistical significance does not, by itself, establish substantive, educational, or practical importance.
Cohen's d standardizes a mean difference in standard-deviation units. For paired designs, STAT LAB reports dz, which uses the standard deviation of the within-pair differences.
Wilcoxon Signed-Rank is a rank-based procedure for paired data. It uses the direction and ranked magnitude of nonzero paired differences. Mann–Whitney U is a rank-based procedure for two independent groups. Neither procedure should be described simply as a “test of means.”
When interpreting Mann–Whitney as a location or median shift, the shapes of the group distributions should be considered. Rank-based methods also have assumptions and should not be chosen solely because a normality test is statistically significant.
Action research is an iterative process in which planning, action, observation, and reflection support progressive revision of practice. Results should therefore present quantitative and qualitative evidence within each cycle and show how reflection informed subsequent planning.

STAT LAB is designed to support students, teachers, classroom researchers, and researchers in education and the social sciences in selecting, checking, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting statistical results in a systematic workflow.
STAT LAB integrates interface design, assumption checks, test guidance, interpretation, E1/E2, and PAOR reporting within the A‑NAN Research Flow: Ask → Notice → Analyze → Narrate, a user-experience workflow designed by A‑nan Kom‑noi. Statistical formulas and methodological principles remain attributed to the academic sources listed in the system and are not presented as newly invented statistical theory.
STAT LAB does not replace methodological judgment by the researcher or a qualified statistical consultant. Appropriate interpretation still depends on research design, sampling, measurement quality, data quality, and the substantive context.
🔒 Privacy: scores and research data entered into the analysis fields are processed locally in the user's web browser and are not uploaded to an external database. Only two aggregate counters—total visits and total analyses—are sent to the central database for usage statistics.
🎓 Developed by A-nan Kom-noi, Faculty of Education, Mahamakut Buddhist University, Isan Campus.
